Sirocco is an energetic jazz & afro funk ensemble based in Rotterdam, where 10 musicians from different corners of europe - led by composer Ko Kunst and tenor saxophonist Max van Houtum - came together to blend a diverse range global styles and traditions, such as afrobeat, funk, jazz & hiph-op, resulting in a powerful rhythmic sound. Sirocco breaks down barriers and invites listeners to join in - the 10-piece line-up features four horns, a five-man rhythm section and an MC and combines danceable energetic rhythms to engage the body with the emotional depth of the Jazz paradigm to engage the ear. The ensemble is led by composer Ko Kunst and tenor saxophonist Max van Houtum and independently released their debut album in November of 2023 - the compositions on this record draw inspiration from afrobeat and funk grooves, afro-cuban music & dub aesthetics. In 2024 Sirocco has been nominated for the Erasmus Prize. After another festival season in 2026 they are gearing up to release their second record.
